Poda Island Krabi: A Complete Guide to Koh Poda

Just offshore from Ao Nang, Poda Island (Koh Poda) is one of Krabi’s classic tropical island escapes: pale sand, clear Andaman Sea water and dramatic limestone scenery. It belongs to the Mu Ko Poda island group and lies within Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, a protected marine area known for limestone karsts, beaches, coral habitats and underwater scenery.
Poda is also commonly included on Krabi’s popular Four Islands excursions, making it an easy day trip for travelers staying around Ao Nang or Railay. The Tourism Authority of Thailand itself includes Ko Poda together with Thale Waek and Railay Beach in a suggested Krabi itinerary.

Why Visit Poda Island?

The first thing most travelers notice is the landscape. A broad sandy shoreline meets turquoise-to-emerald water, while a striking limestone formation rises offshore—one of the recognizable views associated with Koh Poda.
The island is especially appealing when you want a relatively simple beach day rather than a complicated itinerary. The near-shore water is generally shallow, and the beach provides space for swimming, relaxing and photography. The surrounding Mu Ko Poda area is also known for snorkeling and its limestone scenery.

Where Is Poda Island?

Koh Poda lies offshore from the Ao Nang–Railay coast in Krabi Province. The Mu Ko Poda group is approximately 5 km from Railay Beach and around 13 km from Krabi, according to Thailand National Parks information.
Because of its proximity to Ao Nang, Poda is usually visited as a day trip rather than as a separate multi-day destination.

How to Get to Poda Island

The most common option is a Four Islands tour, typically combining Poda with other attractions around the Mu Ko Poda group, such as Chicken Island and the sandbar area around Ko Mor and Ko Thap.

Another option is to charter a traditional long-tail boat, which gives you more control over departure time and how long you spend at each stop. Boats and island trips are widely arranged from Ao Nang and through local tour operators.

The Tour guide estimates the journey from Ao Nang at roughly 20–30 minutes by long-tail boat or about 15 minutes by speedboat; actual travel time naturally varies with departure point and sea conditions.

What to Do on Koh Poda

Swim and relax on the beach. Poda’s sandy shoreline and shallow near-shore water make simply spending time in the sea one of the island’s main pleasures.
Go snorkeling. Thailand’s government tourism information specifically highlights snorkeling around Ko Poda as an activity within the national park. Visibility and conditions vary by season and weather, so follow local guidance on the day you travel.
Photograph Krabi’s limestone scenery. The combination of clear water, pale sand, long-tail boats and offshore karsts makes Poda particularly photogenic.
Combine Poda with the Four Islands. At low tide, the nearby Ko Mor–Ko Thap area can reveal a sandbar connecting islands—the natural phenomenon commonly called Thale Waek, or the “Separated Sea.”

Best Time to Visit Poda Island

For generally more stable marine conditions, the best period for island activities in this part of Krabi is typically November through April. Thailand’s government tourism information describes this period as having less rain and generally better conditions for marine activities.
Weather at sea can change quickly, however. During the wetter southwest-monsoon period, rough seas can affect boat schedules. Always follow boat operators and national-park officials when conditions are unsuitable.
For a quieter experience, an early departure can also help you arrive before many group tours. This is a practical strategy rather than a guarantee—crowd levels vary from day to day.

National Park Entrance Fee

Poda Island is inside Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. The official national-park fee schedule lists this park in Group 2, with fees of THB 40 for Thai adults, THB 20 for Thai children, THB 200 for foreign adults and THB 100 for foreign children.
Check whether your tour price already includes the park fee, and confirm the current rate before departure.

What Should You Bring?

For a comfortable day, bring drinking water, a hat, sun-protective clothing, a waterproof phone pouch, swimwear and footwear suitable for getting on and off a boat. Carrying some cash is also sensible for park fees or incidental expenses.
If using sunscreen, pay particular attention to its ingredients. Thailand prohibits sunscreen containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4MBC) or butylparaben in national parks because of their potential impact on coral ecosystems.
And, as with any marine national park, take your rubbish back with you and avoid touching or standing on coral.

Is Poda Island Good for Families?

Poda can work well for families because the trip from the Ao Nang area is comparatively short and parts of the shoreline have shallow water. Parents should still treat it as an open-water environment: conditions change with tides, weather and boat traffic, and children should be supervised closely.
